First described in 1888 or 1889 by
Léon Abel Provancher as
Eucerceris insignis.
Karl Wilhelm Dalla Torre moved the species to Cerceris, which already had a species named
insignis. Dalla Torre proposed the name
Cerceris provancheri as a replacement, which- according to the rules at that time- was permanent. Even though it was moved back to
Eucerceris,
provancheri is still the correct name: the rules were later changed, but not for names already in existence.
