Giant Swallowtail
A southern species that is uncommon in New York, but this year and last have been some of the best years on record for them in the northeast...

Swallowtail
I have never seen a Giant Swallowtail here before....funny I just planted this butterfly bufh only a week ago..

interesting...
because I just saw one in PA for the first time too. They are much more common down in Florida from my experience.

in Vermont...
this species has had a dramatic expansion in range. The first record for Vermont was July 30, 2010. The past two years, they have been all over the place in the state and appear to be established.

Southern butterflies
I've noticed a similar pattern in buckeyes here in northern Pennsylvania. They used to be an uncommon fall species here, sporadically breeding but rarely surviving the winters. Since 2010, I've seen them every year from May through September, often in huge numbers. It seems a few different southern species have been pushing northward in the past few years...

Southern butterflies
Three years ago I found a Common Buckeye, just the 3rd sighting in the Rochester, NY area. Then they were all over the place in 2011-2012 but I haven't seen any this year.

I saw a number of Giant Swallowtails in 2011, none last year and two in 2013.
