Syrphid!
Hello Donna,
A fly it is, and to narrow it down it is a syrphid.
This is a female of Pterallastes thoracicus!
There are already pictures in the guide, so you can compare with those.

Syrphid!
I was going to label it so, but didn't see anything similar in the guide. The wing position is not typical of the syrphids I've seen and there are so many species it's difficult to know where to start.

Thank you Gerard, I've renamed and moved to the guide page. Thanks also for all the information you have provided on the other images, it is a huge help in the learning process.
