Interesting tips on the antennae and I'm uncertain about the number of wings. The plant is Ericameria nauseosa 'Rabbitbrush'. Thanks for any help you can give.

Nice specimen, nice shot, Jeanne.
I have trouble counting wings too and pretty much gave up. In a view like this, you can tell it's not a fly because of the absence of halteres. Those are small pads that replace the second set of wings and would show up directly behind the other set of wings. Eyes and antennae also help differentiate.

Great tip! I've noticed those white pads on some of the flies but didn't think to look for that here. Glad I'm not the only one that couldn't see the second wings there.
