What am I looking at? - Acronicta funeralis

Ryan helped me ID this moth caterpillar on an outdoor table cloth . . .
It was on an outdoor patio table cloth at my sister-in-law's down the hill from us . .
She called me two days later to examine the cocoon that had formed where I'd photographed the caterpillar.
Wow. Is the moth in there?
I see the remnant paddles enmeshed in the outer strands. The moth is also called a Paddle Moth because of those.
Wow.

Charley! Check this out !
What is going on?

I wonder...
how it is that the cocoon seems to have many more "paddles" than the caterpillar did?
Also, why do the caterpillar and cocoon have the same date?

And furthermore . . . .
. . .. Wow. Ordered your awesome book. Now maybe I'll be able to speak with more authority :)

Hey Charley . . .
They have the same date because the caterpillar pix is from a screen shot from my other computer.
Long, long story that has my 66 year-old head spinning. Having issues with Mac Iphoto, my new Panasonic camera, and my new computer. A lot of ticks . . . Lordy. And I was wrong. The pixes are probably 4 days apart.

Can't explain the apparent difference in numbers of paddles unless there was more than one caterpillar on that cloth and I don't think that's what happened. There were 5 of us sitting around a small circle. Attached a pix showing the area. Sis-in-law says the cocoon was in the same place as the one I photographed that did seem very lethargic. Oh! And the cat picture is not the same one as posted on the initial link! Here:http://bugguide.net/node/view/836671

yes its in there..
it will emerge in the springtime

Whoa! Thanks Eddie . .
What shall I tell sis-in-law to do with that table cloth? She's a neat-nick and would surely like to bring the cloth inside . . . and it's in a rather exposed area on a windy hill.
