pool party - Oxidus gracilis

pool party - Oxidus gracilis
Sarasota County, Florida, USA
October 18, 2006
Size: about 1 inch
Just wanting information of why these are congregating in my pool? Bugs just recently became this numerous. Anyone know what's going on ? They have become quite the nuisance.

Moved
Moved from Polydesmida.

Oxidus gracilis again; I freq
Oxidus gracilis again; I frequently see them in swimming pools.

A Party Indeed!
Here you have a bunch of arthropods from two classes: Diplopoda (Millipedes) and Malacostraca (Isopods and Amphipods). The elongated individuals are millipedes; the yellow-spotted ones look the Yellow-spotted Millipede (Harpaphe haydeniana) here and the paler, dark-backed ones are of another millipede species. The much shorter ones are pill bugs.
I don't really know why these guys would be congregating at your pool; they are terrestrial and would drown in the water. However, both millipedes and pillbugs need moisture to survive, perhaps that's one factor that is attracting them to your pool...

Stephen - Must say thanks much for your feedback. The link to more info on the Yellow-spotted Millipede was an eye-opener. Cyanide ? As I was taking the pic I did notice an odor. I have been scooping up these "gatherings" with my fingers and crushing them. I would also like to thank Bugguide for making these connections possible. This is a GREAT site !

12 x 2 Millipedes, one sowbug
I see a couple-dozen small millipedes and what appears to be the underside of a sowbug but I have no explanation for why they might be going for a swim.
