Is this a larvae stage of ?? - Eriocampa juglandis
Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina, USA
August 10, 2013
Size: est. length 1.25"
Mealy Bug Distroyer - Cryptolaemus? On underside of leaves - about 6 on one large plant - mostly 2 close together. Not a lot of movement but appeared to respond to approaching but not touching twig. Some relocated on the leaf after an hour or so and could be seen slowly crawling. There were several spots of white residue on close by leaves as if one had been snatched and left a white foot print. I did not see obvious population of aphids or mealy bugs but did not examine very closely. There had been some insect worm/caterpillar type chewing on the leaves but I'm not thinking it was from these guys. On undergrowth in wooded neighborhood not far from Blue Ridge Parkway

Tenthredinidae, Allantinae
Eriocampa juglandis (Fitch). In sawflies, only Eriocampa larvae produce this long flaky substance. The only Eriocampa known in NC is E. juglandis. No host plant is mentioned, but I assume it is walnut.

In addition to the three pairs of true legs, there are many soft prolegs along the length of the body - beetle larvae only have true legs.

I'm not an expert on sawfly larvae but an expert can probably point you in the right direction.

Thanks so much - I am not an expert on any but did not feel mealybug destroyer was dead on - my scientific observation was that it was "too shaggy" Today I was able to get a better look at legs and thanks to you I knew what to look for.
