Syrphidae - Ocyptamus antiphates

Syrphidae - Ocyptamus antiphates
Plantation, Broward County, Florida, USA
October 20, 2006
Saw this Syrphidae in the same place for a couple weeks now, he flies differently than other "hover flies" it is a slower movement, the wings have a noticible dark section that covers about 75% of each wing. I found it very interesting and couldn't find it in the guide, hope someone could help.

Thanks,
Charles

Ocyptamus antiphates
This is Ocyptamus antiphates which can be found in Florida according to a reference on Systema Dipterorum. The specimen keys out to this in a key to Ocyptamus and it seems this species has a great deal of variation in color.

Very nice pics of an Ocyptamu
Very nice pics of an Ocyptamus species..
It must be one of the very southern species which are more tropical and are found only in Florida...
