paper wasps - Mischocyttarus flavitarsis - male - female

paper wasps - Mischocyttarus flavitarsis - Male Female
Thompson Falls, Sanders County, Montana, USA
September 12, 2013
Found two male & female pairs on a junction box under the deck. From what I remember the one with the long antennae is the male. I assuming they are Mischocyttarus flavitarsis though I'm not sure why the following male would have bi-colored antennae while mine has all black.

Thanks

Variation
I forgot to comment on your observation: M. flavitarsis shows significant geographic variation and has several described subspecies. The specimen from NM (thumbnail) would be ssp. centralis while those from Montana are ssp. idahoensis.

Mischocyttarus flavitarsis idahoensis
Thanks again!
