Araniella displicata? - Araniella displicata - female

Araniella displicata? - Araniella displicata - Female
Amherst, Massachusetts, USA
June 2, 2004
This was shot in maple tree near our home where these tiny spiders were quite abundant during the warmer months. It looks to be a Six-Spotted Orb Weaver (Araniella displicata), but I would like some confirmation before creating a guide page.

Maybe Araneus thaddeus?
Maybe Araneus thaddeus? I have a picture in the Golden Guide to spiders, but can't find one on the web to compare it with.

Good Guess
I think you're probably right. Kaston (1) says: "carapace and legs are yellow to brown without markings. The abdomen is white, or yellow, or pink, with three pairs of black spots on the posterior half." Looking at your photo, I think there should be one more pair of spots at the very rear of the abdomen (out of view in this shot).

Comparing with the photos on this page, the color can vary greatly.

Kaston says the range is nearly all of U.S. and Canada including Alaska, except for the southeast below NC and the Great Plains area.

Araniella
Thanks Mike,

I've created a Araniella guide page and I'll leave it there until we can get more input as to exact species.
