Kansas Orb Weaver #1 - Larinioides patagiatus

Kansas Orb Weaver #1 - Larinioides patagiatus
Sedgwick County Park, Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas, USA
August 26, 2006

Moved
Moved from Furrow spiders.

Moved
Moved from Gray Cross Spider. The brown tones on this spider and the lack of white around the eyes leads ID away from sclopetarius. I think we'll have to look at this one again. If you see another please get some ventral shots. Thanks!

L. cornutus?
I'm also wondering if this could be L. cornutus. You don't happen to have a ventral image do you?

Sorry, it's the only shot I have.

Moved from Spiders.

Reminds us of the
genus Larinioides. Images in the guide here for comparison.

Kansas School Naturalist
out of Emporia State doesn't list sclopetarius for Kansas, so we're thinking this is more likely cornutus. Also can't see the white V and white outlines that we understand are the fieldmarks of sclopetarius. On the other hand, this is where Jeff moved it and we trust his judgment better than our own???

I'd go with Jeff.
He's da man!

Thanks; Seems Likely
There are some with the shape, others with the markings, but apparently none with both. Maybe Jeff will comment?

Three
species in NA, but not sure which is which.

Thanks
Jeff
