Cicindela patruela

Cicindela patruela "consentanea" from NJ Pine Barrens - Cicindela patruela
Warren Grove area, Ocean County, New Jersey, USA
September 7, 2001
Here is a picture of the rare Cicindela patruela "consentanea". This black form or subspecies is now only found in a few counties in the NJ Pine Barrens. C. patruela has dramatically declined throughout nearly it's entire range in recent decades and it is believed that this is largely due to habitat loss as a result of widespread fire suppression.

subspecies validity
Hi Jeff, not to get into a big discussion here, but I am very skeptical of subspecies in general and especially in tiger beetles. I've got molecular data suggesting that the subspecies in patruela are not evolutionarily significant units after all. That's why I put the subspecies name in quotes. I'm working on these issues as part of my ph.d., so I'd prefer to see how the evidence bears out before using the trinomials. - Dan
