Stainer - Dysdercus andreae

Stainer - Dysdercus andreae
Virgin Islands National Park, St. John, USVI
January 4, 2003
Taken while camping in Virgin Islands National Park two years ago. These were very common. Many were on the husks of some kind of large seed or nut. Any help with ID appreciated.

Cotton stainers
Really great image here showing adults and nymphs of a species of "cotton stainer" in the family Pyrrhocoridae. Very nice, could probably use this for our field guide.

Thanks so much, Eric! & Wow,
Thanks so much, Eric! & Wow, a new family for BugGuide.

Your ID led me to Google, which led me to a biologist's webpage. He does work with St. Andrew's Cotton Stainers (Dysdercus andreae), from the Caribbean. His population was from one island over, St. Thomas. I've asked him to look at this photo...

Thanks again, Eric!

Identification Confirmed
Dr. Harold Grau of Christopher Newport University was kind enough to confirm the ID as Dysdercus andreae.

Thanks to scholars Grau and Eaton for the identification.
