Eurema proterpia - Pyrisitia proterpia

Eurema proterpia - Pyrisitia proterpia
Miller Canyon, Huachuca Mts., Cochise County, Arizona, USA
October 20, 2006
Great number of Tailed Orange (Eurema proterpia) flying in southeastern AZ mountains right now. Got a lucky shot (wings open) at mid elevations, ~7,000 ft. Unmistakably proterpia - no species page as yet. Submitted shot of undersides a few weeks ago.

Moved
Moved from Eurema.
I will let you move your other images; these were undersides?

Yes,
the other 2 pics are undersides. Very difficult to find one with wings open. It was cool up in the canyon that morning and my subject was thermoregulating with wings spread. Thanks Tony. I'll move the others.

Once
again, thanks for attention to detail. Sometimes I have difficulty telling up from down.

I'm wondering if they've come into California
Last week, I had several sightings of vivid yellowish butterfly between the size of a Monarch and Tiger Swallowtail. It's a fairly high flyer, and I haven't seen one land yet. The effect aloft is that of a solid color, i.e. no visible pattern. I think I've seen sort of a tail, or at least an unusual shape to the rear wing.

While this species isn't supposed to be in California, I'm wondering. Bob, does the above sound like yours?

Sounds
more like Cloudless Sulphurs, which are also flying in great numbers here. Think they are in CA as well. The undersides of the "dry form" of the Tailed Orange looks like - that I posted a few weeks ago.

Way different.
Thanks, Bob. Peter Bryant also points to Cloudless Sulphurs.
