What is this GORGEOUS guy? - Meconema meridionale - female

What is this GORGEOUS guy? - Meconema meridionale - Female
Seattle, King County, Washington, USA
September 24, 2013
Size: 1.5- 2 inches
I found this guy on my door this morning. I was enchanted. I tried to find his nationality but could not identify his people:_ More curious than anything. His tail is very sharp and pointed. How sexy!

Appears that both species are introduced now,
assuming that they are really different species at all. This is an adult female with short wings, which makes it Meconema meridionale as distinguished in Europe. Even though not noticed right off, this may be the first "official" dated record for North America.

Moved from Drumming Katydid.

some kind of female katydid
it is definitely a katydid (family Tettigoniidae) relatives of grasshoppers and crickets (note they have the same kind of jumping hind legs). I can't get more specific than that It's "sharp and pointed tail" is actually an ovipositor used for injecting eggs into bark, earth, or other hard surfaces. That's how I know it's a female.

Cool fact: many insects with stingers (ants, wasps, bees) have evolved their stingers from what was once an ovipositor!

wow, fast!
Sooooo interesting. I often find really interesting bugs around my house, one of the oldest in Seattle. I very much appreciate all of your responses!!
