Fresh chrysalis - Papilio zelicaon

Fresh chrysalis - Papilio zelicaon
Alameda County, California, USA
September 29, 2013
This specimen is being reared in a terrarium. A few minutes earlier, the prepupa had raised its head from the prepupal position and was jerking around. I wasn't there at the moment when the larval skin came off, but I took this photo soon after. The chrysalis was still very active, and it continued thrashing and twisting for several minutes. It looked soft and damp. The shed skin was damp.
