Clark the Click Beetle - Alaus lusciosus

Clark the Click Beetle - Alaus lusciosus
World Birding Center at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA
One of our park volunteers found this beast at home and brought it in. It resided in our offices for a few days before I released and photographed it. I originally posted it as Alaus oculatus, but then was advised by a Texas beetle specialist that oculatus did not range this far south. He suggested A. melanops, but it sure does not resemble the current Guide photos of that species....

Moved
Moved from Alaus zunianus based on comments from Ed Riley (Texas A&M) that A. zunianus has not been documented from Texas, and that A. lusciosus has very similar coloration.

Alaus zunianus.
This is a specimen of Alaus zunianus, as told by the extensive white markings, very round eyespots, and overall more robust appearance. A neat animal!

Another image of A. melanops
Great photos, Josh. I note Downie & Arnett do list Texas for A. oculatus, but of course Texas is a big state and maybe the species does not range down to the Rio Grande.

I found another image of A. melanops that looks closer to yours. It is on a Click Beetle page that looks pretty reputable:

This is the home page; click on A. melanops to see the image.
