American Carrion Beetle - Necrophila americana.

These beetles were clustered on rotting mushrooms - very phallic looking eastern stinkhorn mushrooms (Phallus ravenelii.)

Here is another view of a single beetle:

Very Cool
Very cool photograph. This is a neat species anyway, and to see an aggregation on a stinkhorn is just great. Nice, sharp photos, too.

Stinkhorn mushrooms
Those are some strange looking (and rather disgusting) mushrooms. We have a major invasion of them in our backyard. Recently they've been covered in blowflies. Here's a link to a shot of one with only ONE blowfly on it.

I have several other shots where you can barely see the stinkhorn for the blowflies covering it.

P.S. How do I create a clickable link here on bugguide.net?

Here's a clickable verison of the stinkhorn link:

Stinkhorns, clickable links
I've got some photos of a stinkhorn with flies--got to upload them.

There are two ways to do clickable links. One uses a bit of BB Code. It is described somehwere on a forum or a help page, but I can't find it at the moment. Troy has put in a useful link to explanations here.

I'm a "90's" guy, still used to html version 2.0, so I always just write in the old-fashioned html code for a link:

<a href="http://www.bugguide.net/">Link to BugGuide</a>

This is easier for me, since I'm getting to be an old html dog and am having trouble learning any new tricks--in fact, I'm forgetting the ones I used to know.

Very neat, moved to guide page
Since you know what these are, I went ahead and moved them to the guide page for the species.

Neat to see them on a stinkhorn.
