Brown Caterpillar with parasites - Cotesia congregata

Brown Caterpillar with parasites - Cotesia congregata
Venice, Sarasota County, Florida, USA
November 2, 2006
Size: about 1 1/2 inches
When I found this cat yesterday on a palmetto leaf it was still alive. Sadly this morning it was not. Closest I can find in the guide and Wagner's Caterpillar book is Virginia Creeper Sphinx.

re: species…
The braconid, M. congregata, is more than likely an exclusive parasitoid of the tobacco hornworm which this is obviously not. With about 77 species in this genus, it seems reasonable to move this back to the genus level for now.
