Solenopsis
have shorter appendages, are much shinier, and diagnostically, have 10-jointed antennae with the last 2 segments forming a club (12 and 4 in
Aphaenogaster
).

Good call, Margarethe !
It does look a lot like
Solenopsis
.
I had noticed the close resemblance, but couldn't find a good match as I somehow overlooked a few species in that genus, and subsequently started leaning toward
Aphaenogaster
; especially as I couldn't see its thorax spine/spike.
I agree that it resembles
Solenopsis
better than
Aphaenogaster
, but which characteristics eliminate
Aphaenogaster
?
If is is indeed
Solenopsis
then it must very likely be
Solenopsis xyloni
.
