I shot 3-4 individuals, about 20 exposures, and this was the only decent one.

 
That's the way I do it too.
Then, after finding the few pix worth using, I spend considerable time cropping, color/brightness/contrast adjusting and clone-stamping the lint, pollen and other dirt off the jubject and its close surroundings before I re-size them for use on bugguide.

 
You're a lot more dedicated than I am.
I crop everything to 5 x 7 proportions so it looks good on screen, paying attention to the rule of thirds and not much else. (I hardly ever shoot anything vertical, even when the shot cries for it. Another no-no, I always try to have the subject in the center of the frame so I can find it later!)

I use oddball software from Corel - Paint Shop Pro and Photo Album. The latter has a quick fix button that works sometimes, but more often than not I use a four-step wizard to make adjustments. I do love the clone brush in Paint Shop Pro.

It's interesting to see how others work. I was tempted to attend the Nikon digital workflow school for just that reason.
