Moved from Melanoplus.

Melanopus yarrowii
I saw this one a while back, but couldn't find it again. But here it is. The shape of the cerci and coloration are distinctive.

Thanks, David
That doubles the BG population.

Male, probably Melanoplus.
Look at the size of those aroliae (the pads between the claws on each leg)! Very distinctive for Melanoplus and related genera. This is a male, so might be able to get a species, even, eventually. Quite colorful for this genus, too:-)

Thanks, it is very pretty.
I hadn't noticed the pads - interesting.

The hopper was in a newly cleared section of trail that was once water, then thick reeds. I thought it an odd place for a grasshopper. Haven't seen any there since.

I'm generally more alert to these guys now that there's less to see on the trails. Will keep shooting.
