Wasp? - Ampulex ferruginea

Wasp? - Ampulex ferruginea
Henryetta, Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, USA
November 4, 2006
Size: 9mm measured
My cat found this last night inside my house.
As it was going to be a cold night, instead of releasing it outside I kept it in the fridg. and photographed it this morning and released it.

Oregon?
I found an insect that looks very similar to the one pictured, but I live in Oregon and was wondering if mine could be a cockroach wasp. If it is, does that mean that I am likely to have cockroaches? Also, mine is very small, perhaps 1/4 inch long.

Very nice insect
A genus of about 130 species on the planet. Mostly centered in Africa and Asia. Only two in North America. From the catalog, A. ferruginea is known only from Texas though the catalog does not list all collected specimens, just the published ones. This may be an OK record. The other species (see Edward's shot) is much more widespread in the east, though they are both difficult insects to find.

Also, is it a good thing to find a cockroach hunter in your house or a bad thing? Wish I had them in mine.

Ampulex ferruginea
The thought did cross my mind, alas too late.
I had posted one last year at about the same time, but as Eric had some comments and there were links to it I did not frass it.

Thanks to both Will and John.
