Black Fly / Buffalo Gnat - Simulium - female

Black Fly / Buffalo Gnat - Simulium - Female
Thompson Falls, Sanders County, Montana, USA
October 26, 2013
Size: 5 mm
Simulium vittatum? I'm assuming this is a female since the males don't feed on blood. This was collected from inside a horse's ear. As you can see I damaged this one (missing wing & leg parts) during collection. I might try to collect more tomorrow, but they aren't easy to catch without damaging them. The other two I caught were about 3.5 mm.
