Globular Springtails - Ptenothrix

Globular Springtails - Ptenothrix
Seattle, King County, Washington, USA
November 5, 2006
Size: 1 or 1.5 mm
These are my first globular springtails. I thought they were big mites or tiny spiders at first. I like the stripes.

Ptenothrix Species 2
Given your recent findings of 'true' Ptenothrix maculosa,
I would like to suggest to put these cf. maculosa specimens together preliminary as Species 2.

Thank you
I'll put in a request for a (temporary?) guide page for Ptenothrix Species 2. I had thought there was one, but perhaps it was removed...

Ptenothrix cf. maculosa
Given your recent picture of a specimen with a pigment pattern that matches the textbooks 100%, this specimen is clearly different. Therefore I would prefer to call it temporarily P. cf. maculosa.

thank you
I was at work when I moved these earlier...I didn't have much time to look for a species page (unless there was one just created...in which case thanks again!). It looks like Thursday the weather will be passable for looking for soil critters, maybe I'll get some better photos to post.

Ptenothrix maculosa
Hi Cheryl. A second Ptenothrix (family Dicyrtomidae). Well done. The picture is too small to recognise the typical antennal subdivisions. So I used only the dorsal pattern to ID the specimen. If you have any more pictures of these specimens feel free to post them.

thank you so much
I will endeavor to take more photos of these. All the face shots were blurry yesterday. They just wouldn't stop moving. I'll set up some lights, or something (we've been having rain storms the last few days). I took this photo between storm fronts.
(That's Seattle in November!)

Boldly marked!
Congratulations, Cheryl.
