It probably is safe to go with this genus, if not a particular species yet. Wagner's confusion over the New Mexico cat sprung from the description of its eating Datura; but in subsequent discussion, it came out that the caterpillar was never actually seen eating the Datura, which was in the midst of a large patch of Verbesina, a much more appropriate Basilodes food plants...

Hey Roger!

This caterpillar is a serious mystery. Bob Barber has photographed what appears to be the same species in Alamogordo, NM feeding on Datura quercifolia. Reportedly even Dave Wagner is stumped by it!

Josh, when I sent this picture to David Wagner, he identified it as above (he wasn't entirely sure of the species). Has he changed his mind?
