Flat-footed Flies on Stinkhorn Mushroom - Melanderomyia - male

Flat-footed Flies on Stinkhorn Mushroom - Melanderomyia - Male
Durham County, North Carolina, USA
September 21, 2004
These, and similar flies, were the most abundant on the mushroom.Jeff Skovington believes these to be Melanderomyia--see comments under other images. The two prominent flies in this image are males, with their large two-toned eyes.

Whole mushroom, with its fly associates:

Flat-footed flies
Definitely flat-footed flies (family Platypezidae).

Thanks, tarsi?
Thanks. So not all of this family have the dilated hind tarsi? I see this on one illustration, but, of course, there are many genera.

Thanks again for your help.

Flat-footed males
Especially well-visible in males but as you said, not always present within the family.
