Augochlora pura pura ? - Euglossa dilemma - male

Augochlora pura pura ? - Euglossa dilemma - Male
Naples, Collier County, Florida, USA
November 11, 2013
These sweat bees were found dead on the floor of a concrete maintenance building adjacent to a gopher tortoise preserve. Earlier, many other examples of this bee were observed crawling on a collapsed honeybee hive. Can someone explain the rod-shaped structure extending from the mouth of each of these specimens to the posterior end. I'd also like confirmation that the specimens have been correctly identified.

"rod"
The "rod" you refer to are its elongate mouthparts.

Thanks for the Identification.
I really appreciate your help in the identification of this orchid bee and your clarification that the structure is an extended mouth structure.

Great photos of this species!
These photos are actually of females. Females may be identified by pollen baskets (corbiculae) on their hind legs which are used for collecting pollen and plant resins.

Their proboscis (tongue) averages two-thirds the length of their body. Males look virtually identical to females.

Hope your photo project is going well at the Gopher Tortoise Preserve.
