Scudder's Short-winged Grasshopper - Melanoplus scudderi - female

Scudder's Short-winged Grasshopper - Melanoplus scudderi - Female
Doddridge County, West Virginia, USA
November 10, 2006
I was surprise to find on the last remaining Aster, still teeming with activity (halictids, syrphids, spiders, beetles) on Nov 10th. As to size, the Aster blossom is approximately 10 mm. It flew away shortly after these were taken.

Scudder's Short-winged Grasshopper
I imagine that this is an adult Scudder's Short-winged Grasshopper or Melanoplus scudderi, a female. There are some images of a very similar specimen right here on this site at:

It's interesting that you were able to get some great shots of a hopper that actually had the ambition to climb up to munch on those flowers. My captive grasshoppers love munching flowers too, especially dandelions, but I've yet to see a wild one do so!

Yes
It matches the information and images in the guide. It's a first for WV here.

Thank you so much Heimchen, I was pretty surprised to find the hopper at this time of year. It was pretty low to the ground, about 12" or so.
