Spider Egg Casing - Argiope aurantia

Spider Egg Casing - Argiope aurantia
Seabrook, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, USA
November 16, 2013
Size: 1 inch tall
While cleaning my flower garden out for Fall, I discovered this tiny egg casing hanging in a large chrysanthemum plant that I was cutting back. I am assuming that it is a spider egg casing because of the silky strands holding it in place. It looks like it may be empty because of the tiny hole in front. That may have been the exit door for the baby spiders that hatched inside? Fascinating little structure! I searched for images like it and found some Orb Weaver spider egg casings that were similar, but I don't know if they are common to this area. I'd like to know what spider created this little house.

Here is an image of the spider from my yard in 2010.

Argiope Egg Sac
is my guess. Compare yours with

Argiope aurantia
Yes, Lynette... I agree with your guess! I have discovered Argiope aurantia webs in the tall grass on the hillside in my backyard. Just uploaded a photo I took in 2010 of one of their unique zig-zag webs. Should have thought of that. Thanks!

You're welcome
We don't link images unless they are of the same specimen, so I've unlinked that image from these and added it in your description above.

Thanks again!
Oh... I didn't realize that. But it makes sense. Thanks for moving my spider web image to my description.
