Big bird needs a moniker - Schistocerca nitens
Fullerton Arboretum, Fullerton, Orange County, California, USA

Size: <3"
I didn't see the wing color, even after trying to make this hopper fly like a, uh, well, big bird. But at least I have an approximate size and drumstick shot this time.

Gray bird grasshopper.
This is a specimen of Schistocerca nitens, a species quite variable in color, though the white streak on the thorax seems relatively consistent. These are very abundant in Tucson this fall.

Thanks, Eric
