Meloidae Pyrota tenuicostatus - Pyrota tenuicostatis

Meloidae Pyrota tenuicostatus - Pyrota tenuicostatis
Goliad County, Texas, USA
June 6, 2005

Aggregations of P tenuicostatis
In Zapata county 6-2018 aggregation of "hundreds" of these beetles seen on a light post and around a birdhouse. Not sure if they were attracted to lights necessarily in this case.

Probably right to be unsure
I would guess that the lights were immaterial. When I've seen big aggregations of the species, they were around flowering trees, and in broad daylight. They most likely are drawn together by pheromones or other mating signals rather than by lights. Your light post and birdhouse were probably just convenient gathering places that kept them well above the ground, away from many predators.
