Paracotalpa ursina
I agree with Eric, looks like Paracotalpa ursina - four spp in western US, all occur in CA - can rule out most.

Scarabs.
These would be in either of these genera: Paracotalpa or Cotalpa, the "hairy bears." Cute shot:-) Nice find, too.
