Carrizo Scarabaeids on thistle sage - Paracotalpa ursina - male - female

Carrizo Scarabaeids on thistle sage - Paracotalpa ursina - Male Female
Carrizo Plains NM, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA
April 24, 2006
Size: 1.7cm
Large nunmbers of mating pairs.

Why?
Why do insects allways go on each others back while mating?

Moved
Moved from Paracotalpa.

Paracotalpa ursina
I agree with Eric, looks like Paracotalpa ursina - four spp in western US, all occur in CA - can rule out most.

Scarabs.
These would be in either of these genera: Paracotalpa or Cotalpa, the "hairy bears." Cute shot:-) Nice find, too.
