stalker - Female
Pedernales River, Blanco County, Texas, USA
November 20, 2013
Size: about 2.5 cm
This ichneumon was hanging around some caterpillars on a cool, cloudy morning. The Cowpen Daisies that the caterpillars were feeding on had been partially killed off by a recent light freeze.

Moved
Moved from Anomaloninae.

Fantastic!
Best sequence I had ever seen. I hope you kept the caterpillar and get a chance to raise the baby. Gruesome, yes, but worth documenting.

Rearing
I sent the link to this remarkable set of images to Dr. Gavin Broad in London, and he shared them with Dr. Mark Shaw. Both of them hope that this larva can be reared. Host records for Anomaloninae are few, and it would be very worthwhile knowing the genus and species of this anomalonine.

Sorry
I didn't keep the caterpillar and it was on a rather remote private property that I won't visit again for several months. My record for rearing is rather dismal and I didn't even think to try for a parasitoid. I apologize for my lack of insight.

Next Time
Hopefully, you will have a future encounter with this host and parasitoid, but the observations you have made thus far are very interesting and indicate a need for a closer examination of how this parasitoid is apparently able to oviposit without being thwarted by the defensive behavior of the target host.
