clearwing moth - Paranthrene dollii

clearwing moth - Paranthrene dollii
fayetteville, washington County, Arkansas, USA
July 21, 2006
Size: ~20mm
some kind of polistes mimic, the picture can be moved to frass after ID, i just wanted to know what it was.

Probably 2523 - Paranthrene dollii form "castaneum"
... sharpened the focus of your photo in order to better evaluate it. Some species of Sesiidae have several recognized "forms" and there are inevitable intergrades between them. With such variation it may not be possible to find a perfect matching photo -- or written description -- even in a well-illustrated monograph. P. dollii f. castaneum would be the expected form where you live.

This is a decent photo and should not be frassed, but moved to the species page in the Guide.

clearwing
thank you for the ID Bob, i quite like the clearwing moths, although i know little about them, or any moths for that matter. i have seen a number of these, but never manage to get a good picture... perhaps next year. if the photo is worth keeping, i will move it to the species page, and thank you again.
