Skiff Moth - Prolimacodes badia

Skiff Moth - Prolimacodes badia
Greenwood County, South Carolina, USA
July 12, 2004
Identified as a skiff moth...the discussion below is from the original ID request.

Not a very good image; I was playing with new equipment at the time. I didn't see anything quite like it while browsing the moth images. The owlet moths look the closest, I think. Any ideas?

4671 -- Skiff Moth -- Prolimacodes badia ?
What do you think about Skiff? Here's Bob Patterson

Skiff Moth
That looks right. Wish I'd have gotten a better shot, but I recall it flying away when I tried to coax it to a better location.

I saw the skiff moth in the Golden Guide [cite:6869,145] before I posted but their figure shows the wings open and I wasn't sure. That book mentions that there are "distinct races varying in color."

No adults in that section of the guide yet...I'll move it.

BTW John & Jane, is there any siginificance to that 4671 number or does it just happen to be an ID used on the Patterson site?

moth number by Hodges
Yes the number is significant. Every North American moth species was given a number by Hodges and team (?)(who can explain the details?), see alpha furman , and many references and web sites order their species by those numbers. It helps collect species into genera and genera into subfamilies, etc. We try to report it when we have it, not knowing whether some visitors will find it helpful. You will see the numbers pop up on google searches of species, for example, google Prolimacodes and 4671 will show up on some of the synopses and on many of the sites you might choose to visit. Interestingly you will find different numbers if you visit a UK website.
