Representative coverage of most orders. Well illustrated: 1,300 drawings and 142 color illustrations on sixteen plates. Has some life history information and some keys.

Guide to Observing Insect Lives By Donald W. Stokes Little, Brown, and Company, 1983
Good introduction to life histories, organized by season. Has extensive reference list, unfortunately, not organized by subject and not keyed to life history accounts. Still worth reading.

Out-of-print but available in libraries and used. Has extensive life history information for those insects affecting trees, especially lepidoptera, coleoptera. Some photographic illustrations including gallery tunnels of wood borers and the like.

Good reference with many excellent illustrations (1400 scratchboard drawings, 8 color plates of artwork). Out-of-print, but sometimes can be found used. Probably superseded by Papp's Comprehensive Guide to North American Insects.
