wasp or ant? -
Neotiphia
Rattlesnake Wash, Torrance County, New Mexico, USA
September 10, 2013
Size: 1 cm
Not sure if this is a wasp or winged ant, but am guessing the latter. This was in the shrubby desert of north New Mexico.

This makes a new genus for the guide. All terga have distinct polished, almost ribbon-like fasciae. In specimens, these areas typically have a slightly reddish tint. Given the smaller tegulae, this is probably
Neotiphia
. While
Krombeinia
has the same sort of fasciae, absent in our other tiphiine genera, its tegulae tend to be quite massive.
