metallic red-elytra clerid - Zenodosus sanguineus Salem, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, USA November 24, 2006 Size: about 6 mm
I've photographed this attractive little species many times. It's often found under bark or inside substantially rotted trees and logs. This was one of two Zenodosus sanguineus I found inside a log that was riddled with galleries -- presumably of ants since I saw several small pockets of them and no ter*mites as I hacked away for about an hour with my hatchet.
Also present were two spp. of Valg*us sc*arabs, some Lacon discoideus click beetles, a prettily marked anob*iid, a ligh*tning beetle larva, various scaraboid and click larvae, and some Cer*uchus p*iceus sta*g beetles. (Asterisks prevent this image from being shown on word searches for these names.
Here the clerid is seen mounted atop a wet Lacon discoideus click beetle that's playing dead.
