Red-Spotted Purple - Limenitis arthemis

Red-Spotted Purple - Limenitis arthemis
Lakeside Lab, Dickinson County, Iowa, USA
August 2, 2005
If not my first insect rearing, then close to it.

I was taking an insect short course and one of the requirements was to make a collection. I was surprised that most participants would put a found larva into alcohol for their collection rather than try to rear. It would seem that more could be learned from rearing.

I did find an unknown pupa, put it into a jar, and on August 2, 2005 a beautiful butterfly emerged. When I took the butterfly outside for release, several students wanted it for their collections. No way, that was not going to happen.
