Crane Fly - Bittacomorpha clavipes - female

Crane Fly - Bittacomorpha clavipes - Female
DNR Sturgeon River Sloughs Wildlife Area, Houghton County, Michigan, USA
August 17, 2013
This Crane Fly was among several that had and were mating on this day at 4:00 p.m. in a wetland area. They were
mating in a very small area in the grasses. The location is in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan near
Lake Superior. Does anyone know if they send out pheromones to attract females?

Thank you John. They're absolutely exquisite. Lynn Murphy

I agree
I only saw one once and it flew off before I could get a photo.
