Stink Bug - Elasmucha lateralis

Stink Bug - Elasmucha lateralis
Cohutta Wilderness, near Blue Ridge, Georgia, USA
September 5, 2003

Acanthosomatidae
This is actually not a true stink bug, but is a member of the closely related family Acanthosomatidae. It is Elasmucha lateralis. True stink bugs (Pentatomidae) have feet (tarsi) that are comprised of three segments; acanthosomatid's feet only have two segments. This is actually a very nice record of this species. It is more common in the northern part of the country, but there have been some records from the Carolinas, etc. I suspect it occurs up and down the mountain chain.
