Jeff Skevington says, "Yes, we think it is a syrphid.
"Not sure about the genus. Maybe Dasysyrphus but don't put that down as it is a bit of a guess. We have built a large DNA library to help with larval ID. If you want to encourage people to photograph larval syrphids them pickle them in alcohol and send them to me, we can identify them and build a much better larval photo library. Rearing is an option but it is slow and often without reward."
