T. walkeri - Tibicen pronotalis - male

T. walkeri - Tibicen pronotalis - Male
Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi, USA
May 15, 2006
Size: 7 cm
T. walkeri in central Mississippi has red-brown lateral patches on the mesonotum, which, with the bright green pronotum, black head and the red stripes on the abdomen, make it a very colorful cicada. They collect in trees next to wet areas when the weather is dry. Often they sing in small trees at heights where I can capture them without having to climb. Their song is continuous without any set length---a loud, grinding yee-yee-yee-yee-yee-yee-yee, pulsed about three times a second, that can go on for more than a minute.
