Underside of male pedipalp - Phidippus audax - male

Underside of male pedipalp - Phidippus audax - Male
University of Texas at Arlington, Tarrant County, Texas, USA
I made several micrographs of palps as a part of my thesis while attending UTA. This is the ventral side of the tarsus of P. audax's pedipalp (the part that contacts the female during copulation). The smooth, wrinkly tissues are the inflatable hematadoche - they will expand out and change shape during mating. At the bottom end of these is a pointy structure - this is the embolus. The salticid embolus is very short compared to some other groups, like the linyphiids, etc.

Hi Stacey, I love taking photos of these little creature too and admire your micrographs taken with the SEM. I also attended UTA - Arlington school of Architecture. As a hobby I spend my time shooting nature photography. When I was a student in 2012 I toured the lab where they had the SEM. I'm guessing that it was easier for you to gain access to use lab by doing your thesis? What are the requirements to gain access to the SEM? I wonder if they would let alumni to gain access. Please let me know when you get a chance. Thank you! I just uploaded a jumping spider to be identified. I believe it belong to the Phidippus but not sure which one it is. This is how I stumble into your work and photos.
