Dicyrtomina ornata site - Dicyrtomina ornata
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
December 3, 2006
Size: 1.0 - 1.9 mm
On November 30 the upper side of this cross-member was moist from recent rain and it was crowded with 200 or more globular springtails. Before collecting them I observed them with my 15x pocket loupe and noticed several raise their upper bodies and paw the air with their front legs. I didn't know what purpose this gesture might serve.
