Gymnetis flavomarginata (Cetoniinae) - Harlequin Flower Beetle, Arizona Jewel Beetle - Gymnetis caseyi - male

Gymnetis flavomarginata (Cetoniinae) - Harlequin Flower Beetle, Arizona Jewel Beetle - Gymnetis caseyi - Male
Orlando, Orange County, Florida, USA
October 25, 2003
I do not know if either of the common names are recognized; I found each used once. This species is native to the southwestern US, but this specimen was rescued alive by my daughters from a swimming pool in downtown Orlando. After some intense web-browsing we correctly identified it (http://www.living-jewels.com/gymnetis_flavomarginata_sallei.htm). However, as it is not native to Florida, we contacted M. C. Thomas, Florida State Collection of Arthropods, Gainesville, who confirmed the identification and requested it for the collection as it is the only Florida record (it is now G. flavomarginata #1 in the collection). It was identified as a male by markings on the abdomen. How it arrived in Florida will never be known, but it could be an escape as this species is cultivated for the collector trade. Now: Gymnetis caseyi
Both

Gymnetis flavomarginata
Gymnetis sallei
