Rice Stink Bug? - Oebalus pugnax

Rice Stink Bug? - Oebalus pugnax
Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, USA
November 26, 2004
With it's distinct pointed thorax, this looks to be Oebalus pugnax, the Rice Stink Bug. Compare it with this picture from Texas A&M University. If someone can verify (even the genus) then I'll make a guide page for it.

This photo was taken at the Frenchman's Forest Natural Area.

Oebalus
Your shot compares well with the photo you linked to, as well as this one so Oebalus looks very good. The species pugnax is also a good bet, as it was described first (in 1775) and seems to lack the oval pattern on the back of O. mexicana shown half way down this page but I haven't seen photos of the 2 other species listed on the Nearctica site (grisescens and insularis), and don't know whether they occur in Florida. Can they be ruled out?

Florida checklist...
Thanks for the input Robin,

I surfed around and wasn't able to find a decent checklist of Florida Hemiptera. I am wondering if someone with a copy of Slater's "How To Know True Bugs" (1) will help us out...Patrick?
