Aquatic Larvae ?
Allison Park, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA
October 1, 2013
I noticed a number of these in a photo I took of something else. On the surface of a small lake near shore.

Moved tentatively...
I could be way off base here but have developing an interest in freshwater plankton as of late :)

Moved from ID Request.

Here's a very close match
http://lv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Att%C4%93ls:Scapholeberis.jpg

Probably Scapholeberis mucronata which Pennak says is common and widely distributed. I added a photo that shows somewhat of a lateral view.

What types of plankton have you been interested in? I've got thousands of photos of freshwater organisms taken through a microscope. It occurred to me that is probably why this looked familiar, I think I've photographed it before.

nice
but I'd feel comfortable having a specialist confirm before we move (a lot of these guys look similar to the untrained eye). It would be nice; would represent a new genis on BG!

I think you're on the right track...
There's a definite resemblance to image on the upper right side of this page.

Doing a search
for the genus in that link, Scapholeberis, does indeed turn up a bunch of photos that match mine pretty closely. Good job Ken!

I'd swear I've seen them somewhere
but I can't recall where. I went through Pennak's Fresh-water Invertebrates of the US including the Water Fleas section and didn't see anything that looked like it.
