Mite, right?

Mite, right?
Incredible Edible Park, Irvine, Orange County, California, USA
December 7, 2006
Size: 2mm
ID's as far as it'll go, no? (I think Jim mentioned a dearth of mite experts.)

This is my first prisoner, i.e. caught and taken home to shoot. I will not use white bond paper in the future! (Any suggestions as to a better background? I'm thinking foamcore.)

Moved from Velvet Mites.

Hi Ron,
It looks velvety to me. If you agree, I think it's safe to place it in Trombidiidae.

Colored foamcore is nice for at least three reasons. It allows the camera to set an exposure that is better suited for the subject, it has little texture so the automatic focusing system of your camera is more likely to focus on the subject (rather than paper grain), and you can wash it a number of times before the surface starts to degrade.

Agreed & Thanks!
Off to the art store I go! I've almost given up on autofocus on the little guys, shooting with a Nikon D70. Irony is, one reason I switched to more modern cameras was bad eyesight. In general, exposure hasn't been a problem, but it was in this instance. (Maybe more like white balance and exposure.) Next time, I'll use a stronger flash off-camera and balance to that.

Next step is lens experimentation. I'm mounting a 50mm atop my 105mm micro. Zero depth of field, but huge images!
